A História do Bonde 84

Continuing the story of the Santos trams, which began with the tram No. 38 (Part I and Part II), I will now talk about the tram No. 84, currently number 32, symbol of the revival of the tramway in Santos. The CSIC (City of Santos Improvements Company) electrified tram lines and launched the service in 1909. Since the beginning of the City, as the company was known, bought vehicles of Hurst Nelson, a Scottish company, manufacturer of railroad equipment. Among others, acquired trams for passengers, cargo, maintenance and cleaning of streets, and maintenance equipment, enginestricks, etc. .. A total of 48 trams, commissioned between 1909 and 1915.
The then tram No. 42 was part of the last batch of Hurst Nelson trams acquired by CSIC. After the implementation of the new numbering system, where passenger trams would be with even numbers, and others (including trailers) with odd numbers, he then won the number 84.
His painting scheme was olive green with white stripes and numbers until 1951, when the City stopped operating trams in Santos, a service that is now done by the Municipal Collective Transport Company - CMTC. Since 1956, the company begins to reform some trams, vehicles turning into open closed, and also begins to turn off some tram lines. In 60 years, closed the trams make a painting of the same of trolleybuses, silver and redbut still open with the green paint. The tram nº 84 operated in line 39, last line to operate with open trams, and was deactivated in 1968, along with some others remaining. It wasthen donated to the city of Santos, who put on display at the Municipal Orchid:
O nº 84 no Orquidário.
In 1999 began the works for reactivation of the tramway in Santos, building a 1.5 km route through the Historic Centre. The city has owned four of the original tramway system: The No. 1 and No. 42, kept in the garage of CSTC (successor of CMTC), No. 46, on display at the beach and No. 84 in the Orchid. It was decided then that would be restored first no. 84 and trailer No. 1, and then No. 42. No. 46 would not be restored because it lent its engine at No. 84, which would be most preferred among the tourists because it is open. On September 23, 2000, the tourist line was inaugurated, with the tram No. 84, now renumbered to No. 32, a number that continues today. He stayed in operation until 2011, when it was removed to new restoration.
O bonde nº 32 atualmente.
E assim ele é um dos sobreviventes...
And so it is one of the survivors ...

One of the most curious and interesting stories of locomotives is undoubtedly the locomotive CMEF 26. Commissioned to the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia and built in 1898, was used by the Company Mogiana Railway  in the Serra Negra Line, linking Amparo to this city, with narrow gauge (0,60 m). It is a locomotive with running 2 - 6 - 0 (Mogul type), number of manufacturing 18471, weighing 41 tons. Also in the CMEF, was renumbered to No. 1 in 1914, and then with the implementation of the numbering system in 1915, won the No. 9. In the photo below we can see the locomotive No. 26 passing over a bridge under construction in the background style homes typical of the CMEF. Note the pattern of painting CMEF at the beginning of the century, with the name of the railroad in words written in the tender:
In 1916, the then locomotive No. 9 (former 26) was sold to the Tramway Cantareira, who also used narrow gauge (0,60 m), and bought locomotives from other railroads, which widened its gauge or desativavam lines. Kept the number 9, and Tramway Cantareira came to have two locomotives No. 9 while the other ex-Santa Rita Rail Line. In this photo we can see the tramway locomotives, repair the rail sweeps, typical of Mogiana:
On March 31, 1942, the Cantareira Tramway was accired by the Sorocabana EF, which began a modernization plan, including extending the gauge of 0,60 m to 1,00 m. By 1950, the then locomotive No. 9 was sold to Santa Teresa Plant near GoianaPernambuco. Along with it was the locomotive No. 27, equal to 26. There was transformed to 0,75 gauge got the number 11. Operated probably by the end of the railroad in the 1990sFrom there, it was abandoned in the plant, until rescued by a group and taken to the United Kingdom, Brecon Mountain Railway, which is currently being restored and converted to the gauge of 0,58 cm. This is the photo on the site of the railroad:

We hope that the No. 26 back to operate soon, to help tell a little of the history of railways in Brazil!
