The history of the Guarujá Tramway is intertwined with the history of the city. Built in 1893 to take the high society of São Paulo for their vacation homes in newly built Pitangueiras beach in Guaruja, the line of Cia Balneária the Island of Santo Amaro connected the port of Santos, via ferry station initial in Itapema, and then headed for the final season in Pitangueiras. The property line has changed hands several times until it became state in 1927. In 1925, with the electrification of the line, electric trams began to circulate with thesteam locomotives. The line running continuously followed until its deactivation in 1956. The trams were transferred to E. F. Campos do Jordão, where they work today, and one of its locomotives is shown in Leomil Avenue in Pitangueiras, Guarujá.

Certainly, the Pilões railroad is one of the most interesting and most mysterious of Brazil. Virtually everything on the railroad has an interesting story, however, has few records. To begin, the first two locomotives on the railroad were the Kerr Stuart, Midge model, numbers 116 and 635, made in January and March 1898 respectively. All they found was a english site that only cites the Midge model, and the familiar picture of a locomotive in Ponte Preta waiting for people who jumped into the river:
The third engine, also Kerr Stuart Wren model, very famous, was manufactured in November 1913, the number of factory in 1248 and sold to A. P. Bugle, located in Demerara, British Guiana, which he named Maipoori. In June 1914 was sold to Kerr Stuart, who resold it to the City in July. I do not know how, but this locomotive has survived and is operating in Guarita Farm in Rio das Flores - RJ (yes, running!)
But it does not end there: in 1917, in the First World War, three Brigadelok locomotives were seized at the Port of Santos, along with various rail materials, by rails, etc.. Which would be used by the German Army in the African colonies. Later, it was sold to the City, who used the Pilões railway. Their characteristics were: year 1916, part numbers 14494 and 14678, running 0-8-0T. We only know the part numbers of the machines, as one was destroyed when it exploded in the Santos Gasometer.* The other two remained in operation until the end of the railroad in 70s (below). Then, they were abandoned on the premises of the plant Itutinga and after many wanderings, where they were in poweruntil the ABPF, one were preserved in the Park Anilinas in Cubatao, and other in a multi-sport set in Santos. The set was passed to the multi-sport Santos FC, and the locomotive was foundin a junkyard, being saved, and is now being restored in Sorocaba.
Their numbers were 915 (which is in Anilinas) and 811 (which is in Sorocaba), and of which was probably destroyed in the gas tank is unknown. However, the machine 915 displays the number 179 in front. Is this the number of the locomotive? Probably after the accident, which left the locomotive would have been in workshops, and parts used in the 811 and 915. The boiler cover of 915 must have broken, replaced by the 179:
Locomotiva 811.
Compare:
But history has not ended. The railroad out of the SPR Cubatão station, went round the Marzagão hill, where there was an extension to a quarry, and arrived in the Pilões neighborhood there is a bridge going across the river of the same name. From there, bordering the railroad followed the river and then went over in the florest, where stood the village of Itutinga, with hydropower. Then you pass through it again Pilões River, past the dam, and up the Serra do Mar Mãe Maria station, in the Mairinque - Santos (EF Sorocabana).
Legend has it that when they built the Via Anchieta (near the Marzagão hill), the passage between this station and Cubatão has gauge extended from 0.60 m to 0.80m, and it began to travel on a tram built by City of towing a trailer (the old animal trams of Santos). The service did not last long and then it went to the tram Itatinga Village in Bertioga, where he works today. However, in the 20s, the City built the first electric locomotive of Brazil, the Progress. Except that there are many similarities between the tram and Progress, and it has central cabin, which is not common in trams. Moreover, says it was built from a locomotive.
The Progress was built to transport meat from the SPR and the Municipal Slaughterhouse in Santos. It may have lasted until 1956, when it ended streetcar service on Nossa Senhora de Fatima Avenue, where is the slaughterhouse. And guess what: the year of manufacture of the tram is ... 1956 (the year the line was electrified Itatinga)! Compare:
Locomotiva Progresso
Bonde
To conclude: the railroad closed in 1974 due to a flood that damaged several bridges. As I said, the engines 811 and 915 were left stranded in the railway workshops, probably along with the trailer that is now attached to the 915 and Wren. But what of the other trailersfreight cars, maintenance car, where they went? Will continue in the workshops, which are probably abandoned as the entire village of Itutinga? What happened to the Midge engines? The tram is now in Itatinga was made from the Progress? As the Wren locomotive went into Farm Guarita? Mystery ...
